Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender

LESBIAN, GAY, BI-SEXUAL & TRANSGENDER

Background

Traditionally health services in the UK have tended to see LGBT health needs as little more than the sexual health of gay and bisexual men, and in recent years this focused particularly on HIV prevention work. It is true that in the UK gay and bisexual men have borne the brunt of HIV/AIDS and continue to do so – it’s estimated that men having sex with men accounts for about 80% of new HIV infections that are acquired in this country.

Younger gay men may see HIV as a middle-aged person’s problem, and may be poorly informed about sexual health generally due to inadequate education at school on gay health, sex and relationships. Even among older gay men, a certain level of information fatigue about HIV may have set in. We are also seeing rising rates of other sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis and chlamydia.

In recent years health services have started to see the broader picture and are recognising that lesbian and bisexual women and transgender people have health needs too, and that LGBT health includes issues such as mental health and well-being, healthy eating, substance use, smoking and physical activity.  The NHS has produced some excellent leaflets and briefing notes on different aspects of LGBT health, and different communities within the LGBT label. We also recommend the Health with Pride website
(www.healthwithpride.nhs.uk) which is an excellent resource for both LGBT patients and healthcare professionals.  Additionally there is an annual National LGBT Health Summit.
